What Makes a Premium Scrub Fabric?

Hand on smooth matcha Threadicine scrub fabric – fabric guide

Not all scrubs are created equal. The difference between a uniform you tolerate and one you love usually comes down to the fabric. Here's what to look for.

Stretch: two-way vs four-way

Two-way stretch gives in one direction; four-way stretch gives both lengthwise and crosswise. When you're bending, lifting and reaching all day, four-way stretch means the fabric moves with you instead of against you. Threadicine fabric includes 4% elastane for four-way stretch.

Weight: why GSM matters

GSM (grams per square metre) measures how substantial a fabric is. Very light fabrics can feel flimsy and look sheer; very heavy fabrics can feel hot. At 240 GSM, our fabric sits in the mid-weight range: substantial enough to drape well and feel premium, light enough for long shifts.

Fabric weight How it feels Trade-off
Light (under about 180 GSM) Cool and airy Can look sheer and crease easily
Mid-weight (about 180–260 GSM) Drapes well, opaque, still breathable The balance most premium scrubs aim for
Heavy (over about 260 GSM) Structured and durable Can feel warm on long shifts

The blend

Polyester brings strength and colour retention; viscose brings softness and breathability; elastane brings stretch. Our blend is 62% polyester, 34% viscose and 4% elastane.

Water resistance and antimicrobial finishes

A water-resistant finish helps light splashes bead off rather than soak straight in, and an antimicrobial treatment helps your scrubs stay fresher through the day. Both are built into every Threadicine piece. Neither replaces your workplace's infection-control practice.

Look after it and it will look after you

Wash cold, skip the bleach and fabric softener, tumble dry low and use a cool iron if needed to keep colour and stretch performing for longer. The full routine is in how to wash scrubs.
