How to Wash Scrubs So They Last Longer

Close-up of smooth Threadicine scrub fabric

Scrubs get washed far more often than everyday clothes, so how you care for them decides whether they look sharp for a year or tired in a month. These steps work for most modern performance scrubs, including Threadicine's polyester, viscose and elastane blend. Always check the care label on your garment first.

Before you wash

  • Check your workplace policy. Some health services have specific laundering requirements for uniforms. Follow them first.
  • Empty every pocket. One forgotten pen can mark a whole load.
  • Turn scrubs inside out. This protects the outer surface and any finishes from friction.
  • Wash colours together. Keep dark shades like Black, Brown and Blue away from lighter colours like Pink and Matcha.

Washing

Wash cold, at around 30°C. Cool water is gentler on elastane and helps colours last. Use a mild liquid detergent and skip fabric softener, which can coat performance fabrics and reduce their water resistance and breathability. Do not use bleach.

Drying

Tumble dry on low, or line dry in the shade. High heat is the fastest way to wear out stretch fibres, and strong Australian sun can fade colour over time. Remove scrubs promptly so they don't crease in the dryer.

Ironing and storage

Most performance scrubs don't need ironing if you hang them straight after drying. If you do iron, use a cool setting. Store them folded or on hangers away from direct sunlight.

Dealing with stains

Rinse fresh stains with cold water as soon as you can; hot water can set protein-based stains. Treat with a gentle stain remover before washing, and avoid harsh scrubbing that can damage the surface.
