Student Nurse Placement Checklist: What to Wear and Pack

Your first clinical placement is exciting and a little nerve-racking. Getting your uniform and kit sorted early means one less thing to think about on day one.

Check your uniform requirements first

Universities and health services often set specific colours and styles for students. Read your placement guidelines before you buy anything, and check whether a university logo or name badge is required.

What to wear

  • Scrubs or uniform in the required colour. Two sets is a good minimum; three makes life easier on longer blocks. See how many sets you need.
  • Closed-toe, non-slip shoes that you've already broken in.
  • A plain long-sleeve layer if permitted, for cold wards and early starts.
  • Hair ties and minimal jewellery, following bare-below-the-elbows guidance where it applies.

What to pack

  • Black pens (more than you think)
  • A small notebook
  • Fob watch
  • Penlight and trauma scissors, if your placement allows
  • Water bottle and snacks
  • Your ID, immunisation records and any placement paperwork

Choose scrubs built for long days

Placement days are long, and you'll be on your feet learning everything at once. Four-way stretch fabric, plenty of pockets and a comfortable waistband make a real difference. Any Threadicine set is $100 and two sets are $180.
